What Is a 1-2 Switch?

A 1-2 switch, or single-pole two-way switch, is an electrical switch that allows you to control a single light fixture (or device) from two separate locations. This setup is ideal when you need to switch a light on or off from two different rooms or areas—such as entering/exiting a hallway from both ends or controlling lighting in adjacent spaces.

Unlike standard toggle switches that manage a single circuit from one position, the 1-2 switch pairs two toggle switches so that both toggles operate the same light simultaneously. The “1-2” refers to one switch being the traveler (connecting the line and load wires), and the other being the common (connected to either the power or the load depending on the configuration).

At its core, a 1-2 switch uses a dual-pole circuit with three wires:

The switch contains two toggles:

• One toggle acts as a traveler, sending power from the line side.
